My Mum grew up in an Orphanage. She never spoke about it. But my imagination went wild with what may have happened to her. Part of my process of healing this family story for me, was acknowledging how much grief and sadness there was around my Mum being abandoned by her family and the state and the church. It was as if the grief was mine, even though I wasn’t the one in the orphanage. I wanted to go back in time and rescue her and all the other children who has been sent to church-led institutions in Ireland. I wanted to save them all from the experience they had and give them the love they never received. This song does that. It holds the little abandoned children and gives them the love they deserve. The end of the song is one chorus and verse from an Irish folk song I learned when singing with Rún. I use it as a lullaby in this context. The voice over is from a women who grew up in the orphanage with my Mum. I collaborated with Kerry Andrew who composed and sang a hauntingly beautiful backing vocal.
lyrics
Time to leave this shore
Like so many Irish before
In hope of a promised land
Away from the church’s hand
Oh, Seventy years ago
Sailed to a place unknown
Leave the motherland, tuppence in her hand
Ferry to a new home
They said you did not deserve a name
Cull your hair, Dress you in shame
They said you did not deserve a name
Oh little girl
Wish I could be there for you
Oh little boy
Wish I could be there for you
Oh little one
Wish I could be there for you
“You can judge a group and say they are all bad, that’s not right. There might be only two bad in the group.”
A stór, a stór, a ghrá
A stór, a stór an dtiocfaidh tú?
A stór, a stór, a ghrá
An dtiocfaidh tú nó an bhfanfaidh tú?
Bhí mé lá breá samhraidh
I mo sheasamh ar an mhargadh
'S is iomaí fear a dúirt liom
"Monuar, gan tú sa bhaile agam”

I'm not sure where to begin. This is the second album I have bought from Katie. Hello Sun speaks to me because I also long for it to return to the blue skies and the warmth it brings in the spring and summer months. Honestly though, every track is special. It is not often I find myself so captivated by a musician these days, but Katie has truly done that for me. Heart warming beautiful music that should be heard by all who love acoustic guitar and vocals. Real and genuine. Mitch Wild

I first heard Katie Spencer on YouTube when she was featured on the For Bert Jansch playlist. Katie played her own song called Shannon Road. The lead break that she plays twice really got my attention. I became a fan instantly. Every track on this album is lovely. The whole listening experience is like a favourite film running through my head. I'm so glad that in my twilight years I discovered Katie. I wish her a long and succesful career in music. Mitch Wild
The latest LP from Brigid Mae Power is gorgeous and ghostly, setting Power’s voice against soft brushes of guitar, piano, & shuffling drums. Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 17, 2018
