This traditional folk song from the UK, written by Thomas Doubleday and first published in Blackwoods Edinburgh Magazine in 1821 spoke to me of the barren landscape and harsh winter of my Grandmother’s life. I changed the gender of the song to give power to my Nan’s story and to reframe a traditional piece from the female perspective.
The album starts in the depths of winter and I wanted to crack the ice on some of the stories of my family in Cork. I collaborated with MaJiker in his London studio to create a vocal sonic winter landscape as a backdrop to this traditional folk song. My Nan, Bridget Colbert was sent to Our Lady’s Asylum in Cork, after birthing nine children. There was nothing wrong with her. Nobody seemingly intervened. In 1940’s Ireland the men had the power and the local priest and my grandad decided to lock my Nan away. I never met her.
lyrics
O the snow it melts the soonest when the winds begin to sing
And the corn it ripens fastest when the frosts are setting in
And when my man he tells me that my face he'll soon forget
Before we part, I wage a crown, he's fain to follow't yet
O the snow it melts the soonest when the wind begins to sing
And the swallow skims without a thought as long as it is spring
But when spring goes, and winter blows, my lad, an ye'll be free
For all your pride, to follow me, were't cross the stormy main
O the snows they melt the soonest when the wind begins to sing
And the bee that flew when summer shined, in winter cannot sting
I've seen a man’s anger melt between the night and morn
And it's surely not a harder thing to melt a man's scorn
O never say me farewell here, no farewell I'll receive
For you shall set me to the stile, and kiss and take your leave
But I'll stay here till the woodcock comes, and martlet takes her wing
Since the snow it melts the soonest, when the wind begins to sing

I'm not sure where to begin. This is the second album I have bought from Katie. Hello Sun speaks to me because I also long for it to return to the blue skies and the warmth it brings in the spring and summer months. Honestly though, every track is special. It is not often I find myself so captivated by a musician these days, but Katie has truly done that for me. Heart warming beautiful music that should be heard by all who love acoustic guitar and vocals. Real and genuine. Mitch Wild

I first heard Katie Spencer on YouTube when she was featured on the For Bert Jansch playlist. Katie played her own song called Shannon Road. The lead break that she plays twice really got my attention. I became a fan instantly. Every track on this album is lovely. The whole listening experience is like a favourite film running through my head. I'm so glad that in my twilight years I discovered Katie. I wish her a long and succesful career in music. Mitch Wild
